How
it works
To
make it possible to talk to other computers around the world you
need to connect them all together with a signal.
It is a little bit like using the telephone. You have a wire that
connects from your home to the telephone company.
Then the signal is passed by the wire around the world via satalites
and into the other persons phone.
The internet works in the same way, except that instead of a telephone
company you have an Internet Service Provider or I.S.P.
You connect your computer to the phone socket in your house by
using a box called a modem.
A
modem makes it possible to send information or "data"
down a phone line and another modem at the other end transfers
the data back into the same information again, a bit like cracking
a code.
