The
Internet
This
joins together computers in different countries, so you can visit Web
sites anywhere you want, and talk with people all over the world.
WWW
This stands for World Wide Web, which means the millions of pages and
sites found on the internet.
Web
site
Every one of the millions of pages found on the Internet is known as a
Web site.
URL
A URL is another name for a Web site address. It is short for Uniform
Resource Locator - this means the words, dots and letters in the address
of a Web site.
HTML/Flash
HTML means 'Hypertext mark-up language', computers use this code of symbols
to show text and pictures in a Web page. Flash animation does this with
moving pictures.
Browser
Every time you connect to the internet, it is called 'opening a browser'.
E-mail
You can send letters over the internet using e-mail. Instead of a house
address, you send and receive post at an e-mail address instead, which
is stored on your computer.
Graphics
This is what you can see on a web page other than text. Graphics can include
pictures, Flash animation and colourful logos.
Download
If you find something on the Net that you'd like to keep, you can save
and store it on your own computer. This is downloading it.
Banners
These are areas within a web page where you can see adverts.
Link/Hyperlink
A link is an underlined word or sentence that takes you quickly to another
Web page when you click on it.
Chat
To talk to a person, group or a site on the internet by typing on your
keyboard.
Software
A file containing instructions, that tell the computer what to do.
Surfing
A term for using a browser to move through the World Wide Web
